Writing out MELISANDE Act II
I changed the one part of the end-of-act number, otherwise known as "Tea Sequence (and Consequence)," that hadn't been working.
It's astonishing how altering a melody can alter its meaning, and in this case I also altered the rhythm, an initial hesitance followed by a tumbling dotted-eighth-sixteenth bravado, and suddenly I understand Florizel ("Lorrie") much more than I did before, which makes me suspect that the audience will as well.
He really is unprepared for what's happening, after all. He was just passing through, it was a problem he could solve (except the problem isn't solved yet, he has to calculate the logarithm).
At this point my next job is to write out how the second act might go, which I can go ahead and do right now. Paywall for obvious reasons, you don't get this for free.
