I might as well fix RIDE THE CYCLONE while I'm at it
First of all, I did in fact memorize that Bach invention, I'll do another showing-my-work post this Friday, and I may be developing a theory of how one learns that is 95 percent stolen from Lewis Carroll but whatever.
Second of all, learning a Bach invention did in fact help me write a Dieker Finley invention, I found out what I needed to know and put it immediately to use.
Third of all, Larry and I watched RIDE THE CYCLONE (the slime tutorial without Borax) the other night and –
And –
Well, it was very nearly perfect.
But –
I understand the production has been edited since they recorded that particular tutorial, so my particular issue with the text may have already been addressed.
It comes right at the end, when Ocean tells Karnak "You knew I could never choose myself."
And Karnak misses the opportunity to say "You have never chosen yourself. You have always chosen what you believed you ought to be, and so you have always been –"
And maybe we'll give this line to Constance: "Kind of a phony. Sorry."
"No, I'm sorry," Ocean might say. She could turn to Karnak at this point. "What would have happened if I had chosen myself? No, wait, I know. I wouldn't have ridden the Cyclone. I hate roller coasters. I was only doing it because I was the leader of the choir –"
"Nobody voted you leader," Mischa might say.
"I was only doing it because I thought the choir needed a leader," Ocean might correct him, "and because the person who leads has to do the things they don't want to do. The things they dread. Like riding the Cyclone."
"A true leader would be true to themselves," Ricky might say, "so that other people might learn to do the same."
"So you all would have ridden the Cyclone without me?"
"Of course," Constance might say.
"And you would still have been my friend?"
"I might have become your friend," Noel might say. "It's the first time I've ever considered it."
"It's the first time I've ever wanted to be friends with you," Ocean might say. "Now that I've had the chance to see who you are, and who you might have become."
"Might still become," Ricky might say. "We have no idea what's going to happen to us next. We could be at the beginning of an infinite journey."
"So I could choose myself, right here, with you," Ocean might say. "I mean, if you'll have me."
She turns to Jane Doe.
"And she can go back, and become who she was meant to be, since she's the only one of us who doesn't know."
At this point Karnak might say, to Ocean, "And you do know?"
"I've always known," Ocean might say.
And Karnak would reply "Of course you have."
"So I vote Jane," Ocean might say. Then she might laugh at her former, false self. "Democracy rocks!"
And then the rest of the play would proceed as written. ❤️
